Curules

Curules refers to the sella curulis, a ceremonial chair associated with high magistrates in ancient Rome. The chair symbolized authority and imperium and was used in official duties, processions, and state ceremonies. Its possession and use marked the bearer’s eligibility for certain powers and honors within the Roman political system.

Design and function are defining features of curules. The sella curulis was a portable, royal-like chair with curved legs joined by crossbars, enabling practical handling in public spaces. It was typically crafted from wood and often elaborately decorated, sometimes incorporating ivory or metal fittings. The distinctive curving leg design gave the chair its name and served as a visible sign of office.
