Cueslight

Cueslight is a term used in theatre, film, and event production to describe a visual cueing mechanism that signals performers and crew to proceed with a specified action. The concept functions as a visual prompt, typically in the form of a light that is activated by a control system. There is no single standardized product known as Cueslight, but the term is used generically to refer to cue-light devices and software that fulfill the same purpose.

Design and components: A cueslight system generally comprises light units, a control interface, and a communication link. Light units may use LEDs in colors such as red or green to convey status. Controls can range from a hardware cue-light panel to software running on a laptop or mobile device, connected via wired DMX, Art-Net, or Wi-Fi. The system accepts triggers from a lighting console, timing cues, sound sensors, or operator input.

Function and workflow: In a typical workflow, a cue is defined with a verbal cue, a time offset, and a recommended action. When the cue is activated, the corresponding light turns on or changes color to alert performers and crew. Some implementations incorporate multiple cues in a row, priority handling, and fail-safe behavior to minimize mis-timing.

Applications and variants: Cueslight systems are used in live theatre, television studios, concerts, and other productions requiring precise timing. Variants include stationary cue panels, portable battery-powered lights, and software-only cueing tools that simulate physical lights for rehearsal.
