Cloud platforms are integrated suites of computing resources and services delivered over the internet. They provide on-demand access to processing power, storage, databases, networking, analytics, and application development tools through a unified interface. Services are typically billed on a pay-as-you-go basis and can be provisioned and scaled rapidly. Cloud platforms commonly deliver infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and software as a service (SaaS).

Deployment models include public clouds, private clouds, and hybrid configurations. Public clouds run on shared infrastructure managed by a provider; private clouds reside within an organization’s data center or hosted facility. A multi-cloud approach uses services from several providers, aiming to optimize performance, cost, or resilience.

Core components include compute, storage, databases, and networking, plus analytics, AI, and security services. Many platforms offer serverless computing, container orchestration, API management, and identity and access management. Interoperability is supported by standards, but vendor-specific tools are common.

Major platforms and ecosystems include Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform, with offerings from IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud, Alibaba Cloud, and others. Providers offer regional data centers, service-level agreements, and marketplaces for third-party software. Organizations typically mix services to meet workload, cost, and regulatory needs.

Adoption considerations include cost management, data protection and residency, and regulatory compliance. Security posture, risk of vendor lock-in, and changes in service terms are additional concerns. Effective governance, architecture planning, and monitoring help maximize scalability, reliability, and return on investment.
