Choirboys are male singers who perform as part of a choir, typically in settings such as churches, cathedrals, schools, and other musical ensembles. Historically, the term has been most closely associated with the pipe organ culture of Europe, where boy singers were employed in cathedrals, monasteries, and collegiate churches to provide high voices in polyphonic music. In these contexts, choirboys were often recruited at an early age, sometimes as young as five or six, and were trained in religious and secular songs, as well as in vocal technique and music theory.

During the medieval and Renaissance periods, choirboys played a vital role in sustaining liturgical music traditions. Many notable composers, such as Josquin des Prez and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, mentored boys in cathedral schools.
