The term is used in urban planning and architectural discourse to describe settlements that are integrated with canal networks rather than land-bound neighborhoods.

Historically, canal dwellings emerged along major European and North American canal systems where waterways provided transport, water supply, and shelter from urban density. In the Netherlands, the Amsterdam canal belt and adjacent houseboats are iconic; in the United Kingdom, floating homes and moorings along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, Regent's Canal, and other routes have supported resident communities. Giethoorn in the Netherlands is a village known for its extensive canal network and boat-based transport. In North America, some cities with built-in canals or riverfronts have minority floating-home communities.
