Luís Vaz de Camões is widely regarded as Portugal's greatest poet. Born likely around 1524 or 1525, his life was as dramatic and adventurous as his literary works. Camões is best known for his epic poem Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads), published in 1572. This masterpiece recounts the voyages of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama to India, weaving together historical events with mythological elements.
