Originating in the crafts tradition, a master craftsman would complete a piece to demonstrate mastery, sometimes as part of a guild process. In French, the related expression chef-d'œuvre literally means "great work." Over the centuries the idea has broadened beyond guild settings to encompass works deemed extraordinary within a culture.

Evaluating a masterpiece involves several criteria: technical mastery, originality, emotional or intellectual impact, influence on subsequent work, and longevity of esteem. Because standards differ across cultures and eras, the designation is inherently debatable and frequently reassessed as tastes change.
