It allows for the simulation of fluid behavior, heat transfer, mass transfer, chemical reactions, and related phenomena.

CFDpohjaisiin applications are widespread and include engineering disciplines such as aerospace, automotive, chemical process, civil, and mechanical engineering. In aerospace, CFD is used to design aircraft wings, predict aerodynamic performance, and analyze engine combustion. The process of performing CFD simulations typically involves three main steps: preprocessing, solving, and postprocessing. Preprocessing includes generating the geometry of the problem, discretizing it into a mesh of smaller control volumes or elements, and defining the fluid properties and boundary conditions. The solver then applies numerical methods to solve the governing equations of fluid flow (Navier-Stokes equations) for each element in the mesh. Postprocessing involves visualizing and analyzing the results, such as velocity contours, pressure distributions, and temperature maps, to gain insights into the fluid behavior.

CFD simulations can significantly reduce the need for expensive and time-consuming physical experiments, allowing for rapid design iteration and optimization. However, the accuracy of CFD results depends heavily on the quality of the mesh, the chosen numerical schemes, and the input parameters. Validation against experimental data is often necessary to ensure the reliability of CFD predictions.
