Bulkbaserts

Bulkbaserts are a family of sensor modules designed to monitor bulk materials in storage and transport. They provide real-time measurements of mass, volume, moisture content, temperature, and fill level for commodities such as grain, coal, cement, and aggregates. The term is used in industrial automation and logistics to describe self-contained, rugged devices that attach to silos, trucks, ships, or conveyor belts and feed data into warehouse management and enterprise resource planning systems.

Technology and design: Bulkbaserts typically combine multiple sensing modalities. Mass is inferred from attached load cells or through dynamic weighing on a platform; fill level is estimated by ultrasonic, radar, or vision-based sensors; moisture and temperature are measured with embedded probes. Devices are designed for harsh environments, often rated IP65 or higher, and include wireless communication (Wi-Fi, cellular, or low-power wide-area networks). Power is supplied by batteries, with optional solar charging for remote sites, and firmware supports remote updates.

Deployment and use: Bulkbaserts are used in silos, hopper cars, ships, and conveyor lines. Data are integrated with silo management systems, ERP, or transport scheduling software, enabling real-time inventory tracking, spoilage reduction, and improved planning. Variants range from compact units for small bins to rugged, high-capacity sensors for large industrial installations.

History and reception: The Bulkbasert concept emerged in the early 2010s as IoT-enabled condition-monitoring expanded into bulk-material handling.
