Breekpunt

Breekpunt is a Dutch term that refers to the point at which something breaks, fails, or undergoes a sudden change under stress or pressure. The expression is used in both concrete, technical contexts and more abstract ones to indicate a threshold beyond which normal behavior cannot continue.

In materials science and engineering, breekpunt denotes the load or stress level at which a material fractures. In a tensile test, the specimen may first yield, then neck, and finally reach the breekpunt where it breaks apart. Brittle materials tend to fracture near their maximum stress, while ductile materials may exhibit significant deformation before breaking. The breekpunt is influenced by factors such as material composition, temperature, rate of loading, and the presence of flaws or defects.

In genetics, breekpunt (breakpoint) refers to a chromosomal location where DNA breaks and rejoining events produce structural rearrangements, such as translocations, inversions, or deletions.
