Bibshorts

Bibshorts are a type of cycling clothing that feature suspender-like straps extending from the shorts up over the shoulders. These straps attach to the waistband of the shorts, holding them in place and eliminating the need for a conventional elastic waistband. This design is favored by many cyclists for its comfort and performance benefits.

The primary advantage of bibshorts is their ability to keep the shorts from slipping down, especially during intense riding or when a rider is in a more aggressive, aerodynamic position. The suspenders distribute the pressure evenly across the shoulders, rather than concentrating it around the waist, which can prevent discomfort and chafing for some riders. This also means that bibshorts can be made from lighter, more breathable materials without the risk of them sagging.

Bibshorts typically incorporate a padded insert, known as a chamois or pad, in the crotch area. This chamois is designed to provide cushioning and reduce friction between the rider and the saddle, enhancing comfort on longer rides. The construction of bibshorts also allows for a more streamlined fit, as there is no bulky waistband to bunch up or create pressure points.

The straps are usually made of elasticated mesh or a similar breathable fabric to ensure comfort and ventilation. While initially associated with professional cycling, bibshorts are now widely used by recreational cyclists due to their superior comfort and fit. They are typically worn without underwear, as the chamois is designed to be worn directly against the skin to wick away moisture effectively.
