Baualter

Baualter is a term used in architectural conservation and heritage management to describe the nominal age of a building or its principal elements. The word combines the German Bau, meaning construction or building, and Alter, meaning age, and it is often applied in German-speaking countries.

It denotes an estimated period of construction or the building's prime phase, used for planning, regulation, and preservation decisions. It may differ from the literal number of years since completion, especially when a structure has undergone significant renovations, additions, or rebuilding.

Determination involves archival research (construction records, permits, inventories), architectural analysis (construction techniques, stylistic cues), and scientific dating methods where appropriate (dendrochronology for timber, radiocarbon dating for organic materials). Physical inspection of materials and references to historical maps can also inform the Baualter.

Limitations: Baualter is an estimate; inaccuracies can arise from later alterations, reuse of components, or ambiguous records. It is used as a planning and reporting tool rather than a precise chronological measure.
