Dendrochronology is the science of dating wooden materials by analyzing the patterns of tree-ring growth. It relies on the fact that many trees in temperate and high-latitude regions form one growth ring each year, producing a record that reflects past environmental conditions as well as the age of the tree.

Tree rings vary in width, density, and other features in response to climate, moisture, temperature, competition, fire, and disease. By measuring these variations and matching them across samples, researchers can create a continuous chronology for a region. Crossdating is a key method in which distinctive ring patterns are aligned among many samples to place each ring in an exact calendar year. This is complemented by measurement and statistical standardization to remove long-term growth trends and emphasize year-to-year signals.

Chronologies can be used to date wooden artifacts, timbers, and archaeological contexts by matching their ring sequences to established master chronicles. Dendrochronology also provides calendar-year anchors for radiocarbon dating, a process known as calibration or wiggle-matching, improving the accuracy of radiocarbon age estimates.

Applications span archaeology, paleoclimatology, geology, and forestry. Master chronologies exist for parts of Europe, North America, and other regions, with particularly long records in some species such as bristlecone pines. Limitations include the need for well-preserved wood, regional and species dependence, and the absence of clear ring patterns in tropical regions. Missing rings, juvenile growth, and disturbances can complicate the analysis, but when available, dendrochronology offers precise annual dating and insights into past environments.
