The central feature is a mechanical or electronic sorting system that captures, verifies, and holds the same bills that customers deposit, reducing the need for banks to carry large inventories of cash in the field.

The technology behind a cash recycler was developed in the early 2000s in response to the growing demand for secure, efficient cash handling in retail and banking environments. After a customer deposits money, the machine uses optical or magnetic scanners to check the authenticity of each note. Once accepted, the bills are routed into an internal storage compartment.
