BWTSsystem, short for ballast water treatment system, is a marine engineering installation used on ships to treat ballast water before it is discharged. Its primary purpose is to reduce the transfer of aquatic invasive species, pathogens, and other potential contaminants in ballast water, in line with international and national regulations.

Most BWMS operate as ballast water is taken in (open-loop) or stored after treatment (closed-loop). A typical treatment train includes filtration to remove particulates, followed by a disinfection step to inactivate living organisms. After treatment, the water is either stored in ballast tanks for later use or discharged in accordance with the ship’s ballast plan and regulatory requirements.

Common technologies used in BWMS include mechanical filtration, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, electrochlorination (EC), ozone-based oxidation, and chemical dosing with oxidants such as chlorine dioxide. Some systems employ heat or advanced oxidation processes. The choice of technology depends on factors such as port state requirements, water quality, energy use, maintenance needs, and vessel operation.

Regulatory context is provided by the International Maritime Organization’s Ballast Water Management Convention, which requires ballast water discharges to meet defined standards for viable aquatic organisms (the D-2 standard). Ships may require type-approved BWMS from recognized manufacturers, with approval and verification schemes administered by flag states and, in some regions, national authorities such as the United States Coast Guard.

Operational considerations include routine maintenance (filtration and lamp replacement, chemical dosing control), system monitoring, and compatibility with existing ballast operations. Potential environmental and safety concerns include residual oxidants, byproducts, and corrosion risk in ballast systems. BWTSsystem installations are commonly retrofitted or included in newbuilds as part of compliance planning.
