Discharge refers to the release of substances from a source into the surrounding environment. In electricity, a discharge refers to the rapid flow of electric charge through an insulating medium, seen as sparks, arcs, or plasma, often occurring when breakdown voltages are exceeded. In biology or medicine, bodily discharges describe fluids produced or released by the body, such as nasal mucus, vaginal secretions, wound exudate, or urine; clinical interpretation depends on context and composition.

Discharge measurement focuses on rate and composition, with example units such as liters per second for liquids or mass per time. Distinctions are made between point sources and diffuse sources for regulatory purposes.
