Autositz

Autositz, commonly referring to a child car seat, is a device designed to protect a child in a moving vehicle. It is chosen according to the child’s weight and height and is used in addition to or instead of the vehicle’s regular seat. The primary purpose is to restrain the child during travel and to distribute crash forces safely.

Types of autositze include infant seats (rear-facing only) for newborns, convertible seats (rear-facing then forward-facing) that typically support higher weights rear-facing, combination seats (harnessed forward-facing that later convert to belt-positioning boosters), booster seats (which position the vehicle’s seat belt for older children), and all-in-one seats that cover multiple stages. The choice depends on the child’s size, the vehicle, and local regulations.

Installation methods vary. Many seats use ISOFIX/LATCH anchors attached to the car frame, sometimes with a top tether; others rely on a secure seat belt. Proper installation requires following the manufacturer’s instructions, minimizing seat movement, and ensuring the harness is snug with the chest clip at armpit level. Rear-facing seats are typically used until the child exceeds weight or height limits, after which forward-facing use begins according to the seat’s specifications.

Standards and lifecycle: In the European Union, child seats are tested to ECE R44/04 and UN R129 (i-Size). In the United States, FMVSS 213 governs child restraints. Seats have expiration dates, usually 6–10 years from manufacture; a seat involved in a crash should be replaced. Regular checks and professional assistance can help ensure proper fit as the child grows.
