Autocross

Autocross is a form of motorsport in which drivers navigate a course marked by traffic cones on a parking lot or similar paved area. The emphasis is on precise car handling, accuracy, and quick execution rather than outright speed, with courses designed to maximize technical challenge within low speeds for safety.

Events are typically organized by automotive clubs such as the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) under its Solo program, as well as by NASA and local autocross clubs. A typical event includes a course walk, a number of timed runs for each participant, and a scoring system that uses the fastest valid time with penalties for cone knockdowns or missed gates. Courses usually feature straightaways, slaloms, turns and offset sections; they are set by course designers and marked with pylons.

Vehicles range from street cars to purpose-built race cars. Most participants compete in classes that reflect vehicle type and modifications, with separate categories for street-legal cars, race-prepared vehicles, and tire choices. Before the event, vehicles undergo a safety inspection; helmets are commonly required for certain classes; drivers must wear seat belts. Vehicles must comply with noise and safety regulations set by the organizing club.

Autocross is distinct from circuit racing and rally; it focuses on single-car time trials rather than wheel-to-wheel competition. It emphasizes driving technique, control, and vehicle setup; it is widely accessible and can be pursued at local clubs year-round, often in parking lots or airfields.
