A slalom is a type of race or competition involving navigating a course marked by obstacles. The most common association with the term is in skiing, where skiers race down a slope, weaving in and out of poles or gates. The gates are typically placed in a zig-zag pattern, requiring quick turns and precise control. Different disciplines of skiing, such as alpine skiing, have various slalom events, including slalom (SL) and giant slalom (GS), which differ in gate spacing and course length.

Beyond skiing, the term "slalom" is also used in other sports. In waterskiing, a slalom course consists of buoys that the skier must weave around. Kayaking and canoeing also feature slalom events, where athletes navigate a turbulent stretch of water marked by gates. In motorsports, a gymkhana or autocross event, which involves driving through a course of cones, is often referred to as a slalom. The fundamental principle across all these sports remains the same: speed and agility in maneuvering around a defined set of markers. Successful slalom performance requires excellent balance, quick reflexes, and a deep understanding of the course's layout.
