AutoEvent

AutoEvent, or autoevent, is a general term used to describe an event that is generated automatically by a system as part of its normal operation, rather than being initiated directly by a user. In event-driven and asynchronous architectures, autoevents are emitted when predefined conditions are met, when a timer fires, or when a change in state occurs. They allow software components to react to changes without explicit user input.

Autoevents are produced through various mechanisms. Timers and schedulers can trigger actions at regular intervals or after a specified delay. Observers and publish-subscribe patterns emit events in response to state changes or external inputs. Systems may also generate autoevents in response to interrupts, signals, or completed tasks. In many environments, an event loop or an event bus coordinates the delivery of these autoevents to interested handlers.

Common uses include updating user interfaces in response to time-based or data changes, refreshing data in dashboards, orchestrating automated workflows and pipelines, and triggering monitoring or alerting actions. Autoevents are also used in automated testing to simulate user actions or system conditions without manual interaction.

Key design considerations for autoevents include reliability and fault tolerance, ensuring idempotence so repeated events do not cause unintended effects, handling timing drift and time zones, and proper error handling and retry policies. They should be well-documented within a system’s event model to avoid ambiguity about what triggers an event and how it should be processed.
