Asemesta

Asemesta, commonly asbestos, refers to a group of naturally occurring silicate minerals that form long, flexible microscopic fibers. The best known forms are chrysotile, which belongs to the serpentine family, and the amphiboles crocidolite, amosite, tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite. Chrysotile is the most widely used form historically, though all types share a high resistance to heat and chemical inertness.

Asbestos has been valued for properties such as tensile strength, durability, and insulating ability. It has been used in a wide range of products, including building materials (roofing, cement, insulation), fireproofing, automotive brake linings, gaskets, textiles, and sealants. The mineral’s microscopic fibers can separate and become suspended in the air, where inhalation poses health risks.

Health effects from asbestos exposure can be serious and sometimes fatal. Inhaled fibers can cause asbestosis (lung fibrosis), lung cancer, and mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lining of the lungs or abdomen. The diseases often have long latency periods, typically several decades after exposure. Risk increases with the intensity and duration of exposure, and smoking amplifies the risk of lung cancer associated with asbestos.

Regulation and public health responses have led to bans or strict restrictions on many forms of use in numerous countries. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies asbestos as a Group 1 carcinogen. Safe handling and abatement are essential and should be conducted by licensed professionals following local regulations, especially in older buildings that may contain asbestos-containing materials. Global efforts focus on reducing exposure and preventing asbestos-related diseases.
