Appearance-based refers to a family of computer vision and pattern recognition methods that rely primarily on the visual appearance of image data to perform tasks such as recognition, detection, or tracking. Rather than constructing explicit 3D models or geometric features, appearance-based approaches learn discriminative representations from labeled examples and compare new images to those representations.

Historically, appearance-based face recognition with eigenfaces (PCA-based) demonstrated that faces could be described by a low-dimensional appearance space. Later, Active Appearance Models integrated shape and texture to track facial landmarks. Appearance-based methods have been applied widely to objects, scenes, and gestures by exploiting holistic or regional appearance cues rather than model-based geometry.

Common techniques include handcrafted features such as color histograms, texture descriptors, gradients, Local Binary Patterns, as well as regional features and, more recently, deep features learned by convolutional neural networks. The processing pipeline often involves feature extraction, dimensionality reduction or embedding, and a classifier or similarity metric. In modern practice, deep learning has become dominant, with CNNs learning end-to-end representations for tasks such as face recognition, object recognition, and activity analysis.

Advantages include data-driven adaptability and robustness to some intra-class variation provided by sufficient training data. Limitations include dependence on representative datasets, sensitivity to illumination and occlusion, and potential lack of explicit geospatial reasoning. Appearance-based methods typically complement geometry- or model-based approaches and remain a core option when 3D models are difficult to obtain or when rapid development from labeled data is desired.
