Antiflood

Antiflood refers to a set of techniques and policies designed to prevent flooding in online systems, including chat services, forums, and network infrastructure. Its aim is to limit the impact of excessive message rates or traffic that can degrade performance or disrupt normal use.

In chat and messaging systems, antiflood measures commonly include rate limiting, per-user or per-channel quotas, and time-based windows that restrict how many messages a single user can send within a given period. Many implementations detect bursts of activity and apply throttling, temporary muting, or automatic kicking or banning for repeat offenders. Some systems also allow short burst permissions to accommodate brief periods of high activity while preserving long-term limits.

Implementation details often involve counters and timers that reset after a defined interval. A flood score or threshold may trigger actions when a user exceeds acceptable limits. Some antiflood configurations distinguish between global limits and per-resource (per-channel or per-room) limits, and may apply more lenient rules to trusted moderators or to verified accounts. Client-side antiflood features can also delay or queue messages to avoid triggering server-side protections.

Effectiveness and trade-offs are central to antiflood design. Properly tuned systems reduce server load, prevent spam, and improve reliability, but overly aggressive limits can hinder legitimate communication, especially during events with high user activity. Ongoing tuning and policy adjustments are common to balance accessibility with protection.

Antiflood concepts overlap with broader network security practices, such as DoS protection, rate limiting, traffic shaping, and connection management, which aim to mitigate flood or abuse across services and protocols.
