Antifingerprint

Antifingerprint refers to the property of a surface or coating that minimizes the appearance of fingerprints and smudges, making surfaces easier to clean and read. It is commonly used on consumer electronics, glass, and display surfaces. Antifingerprint coatings are typically applied to reduce the adhesion of oils from the skin and to lessen staining from liquids.

Most antifingerprint performance relies on oleophobic and sometimes hydrophobic chemistry. Fluorinated polymers and siloxane-based coatings are common, often forming a thin film that reduces oil transfer from skin. Micro- or nano-scale texturing can further lower contact area. Some coatings are hard-wearing polyurethanes or diamond-like carbon layers; others are softer films that wear with use.

Applications include smartphone and tablet screens, laptop displays, glasses, automotive glass, and protective films. Types include hard-coat antifingerprint layers, soft, sacrificial coatings, and multilayer stacks that combine anti-smudge with anti-scratch or anti-glare properties.

Durability depends on abrasion resistance and cleaning. Reapplication or recoating may be required over time; some coatings can be damaged by solvents or abrasive cleaning. Testing often uses contact angle measurements, smear resistance tests, and optical clarity under illumination.

Environmental and health considerations arise with certain chemistries, particularly some fluorinated compounds used in older antifingerprint formulations. Industry trends favor low-toxicity, fluorine-free coatings that still deliver smudge resistance. The term antifingerprint is sometimes used in consumer marketing alongside related terms such as oleophobic or smudge-resistant.
