Akillesjännetulehdus

Akillesjännetulehdus, also known as Achilles tendinitis, is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects your calf muscles to your heel bone. This condition is common among athletes, especially runners and jumpers, but can also affect individuals who are not physically active. The inflammation typically causes pain and stiffness in the back of the heel, particularly in the morning or after periods of rest. The pain may worsen with activity and can sometimes be accompanied by swelling or tenderness.

The exact cause of Achilles tendinitis is not always clear, but it is often related to overuse or repetitive strain on the tendon. Factors that can contribute to its development include sudden increases in activity levels, inadequate warm-up or stretching, tight calf muscles, improper footwear, and aging, which can lead to decreased flexibility and strength in the tendon. Biomechanical issues, such as flat feet or high arches, can also play a role.

Diagnosis of Achilles tendinitis is usually made based on a physical examination and the patient's medical history. Imaging tests, such as ultrasound or MRI, may be used to confirm the diagnosis and assess the severity of the inflammation or any associated tears. Treatment for Achilles tendinitis typically involves conservative measures aimed at reducing pain and inflammation and promoting healing. These may include rest, ice application, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), stretching exercises, and physical therapy. In more severe or persistent cases, other treatments like corticosteroid injections or surgery may be considered. Prevention strategies focus on gradual increases in activity, proper warm-up and cool-down routines, appropriate footwear, and maintaining good calf muscle flexibility and strength.
