Emotional states can modulate motivation: positive affect generally broadens attention, increases willingness to engage in exploration and sustained effort, and strengthens approach motivation; negative affect can either inhibit action or sharpen focus, depending on arousal and context. Conversely, goal setting, rewards, and goal progress can alter affect, producing relief, satisfaction, or frustration. Neuroscience research points to overlapping circuits involved in affect and motivation, including the amygdala, nucleus accumbens, and prefrontal cortex, with dopamine signaling supporting reward learning and effort allocation. Hormonal and autonomic states further color motivational readiness and emotional experience.

Applications span education, therapy, management, and marketing. In education, mood states can affect engagement and persistence; in clinical settings, affect regulation interacts with motivational deficits seen in mood disorders; in organizations, emotional climate can influence motivation and performance.

Measurement relies on self-report instruments, behavioral tasks, physiological indicators, and neuroimaging; the term remains descriptive rather than a single, unified theory, and its use varies by field.
