Aetatormätning, often translated as age estimation or age assessment, refers to the process of determining an individual's age. This is a critical practice in various fields, including forensics, archaeology, anthropology, and medicine. In forensic contexts, age estimation can be crucial for identifying skeletal remains, determining the age of victims or perpetrators in criminal investigations, and for assessing the age of unaccompanied minors.

Several methods are employed for age estimation, each with its own strengths and limitations. Dental development and eruption patterns are commonly used, particularly in younger individuals, as teeth undergo predictable changes throughout childhood and adolescence. Skeletal development, including the fusion of epiphyses (the ends of long bones) and changes in bone structure, is another significant indicator, especially for adolescents and young adults. Radiographic techniques, such as X-rays, are frequently used to assess these skeletal and dental markers.

For older individuals, age estimation becomes more challenging. Changes in degenerative joint diseases, the degree of cranial suture closure, and microscopic changes in bone tissue can provide clues, but these are often less precise. The accuracy of age estimation can be influenced by factors such as individual variation, environmental conditions, diet, and health status. Therefore, multiple indicators are often considered and combined to arrive at the most reliable age assessment. Research continues to refine these methods, aiming for greater accuracy and wider applicability across different populations and age ranges.
