Adoptable

Adoptable is an adjective meaning capable of being adopted. In common usage it refers to individuals—most often animals in shelters or rescues—who are available for permanent placement in a new home. The term is also used in child welfare to describe a child who is legally eligible for adoption and considered ready to be placed with adoptive parents.

In animal welfare contexts, adoptable animals are those that have been medically and behaviorally assessed and cleared for adoption. The process typically involves intake screening, veterinary care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, microchipping, and behavior assessment. Animals may be labeled adoptable once they meet minimum health and safety criteria. In child welfare contexts, an adoptable child is one who has a permanency goal of adoption and for whom parental rights have been terminated or are in the process of termination, making them eligible for adoption by approved families. The process includes court proceedings, matching with prospective families, and post-placement services. Some children may have concurrent planning for reunification; others may age out if not adopted.
