Adaptiivsuse is a term used in some discussions of systems design and cognitive science to describe the dynamic capacity of a system, agent, or organization to adjust its behavior, structure, or parameters in response to changing conditions, with the aim of preserving or improving effectiveness. The term is a contemporary neologism and is often described as a form of adaptiveness that emphasizes ongoing, context-sensitive change rather than fixed, one-off adjustments. Adaptiivsuse encompasses sensing changes, interpreting signals, deciding on appropriate adjustments, and implementing changes that alter performance or function.

In practice, it is applied across diverse fields. In technology, adaptive software and user interfaces adjust features based on user behavior. In robotics and control systems, adaptable controllers compensate for uncertainty and disturbances. In biology and ecology, the concept aligns with ideas of resilience and adaptive capacity. In education and management, adaptive approaches tailor strategies to evolving needs and environments.

Measuring adaptiivsuse is complex. Researchers look at response speed to environmental changes, stability of performance under varying conditions, and the extent of behavioral or structural plasticity. Design practices to enhance it include incorporating feedback loops, modular architectures, and learning-based updating, as well as mechanisms to prevent maladaptive overreaction.

Criticisms center on potential increases in system complexity, the risk of instability from excessive or misdirected adaptation, and questions about when adaptation should occur versus maintaining baseline behavior. Balancing flexibility with reliability remains a central design challenge.
