In industry and environmental contexts, ülejääke is often used to describe waste streams that require management, treatment, or potential recovery rather than regular product streams.

Common sources of ülejääke include mining and metallurgical operations (slag and tailings), chemical processing (spent catalysts, solvent residues), energy production (fly ash and boiler ash), agriculture and food processing (organic and spoiled by‑products), and construction and demolition activities (construction debris). The exact composition and hazard level of ülejääke depend on the original process and materials used, which in turn determines required handling and disposal methods.

Management of ülejääke involves classification, segregation, storage, and appropriate treatment or disposal. Hazardous residues require stricter controls, containment, and authorization.
