Överligganden is a geological term used to describe rock units that lie on top of another unit in a stratigraphic sequence. These overlying units are younger than the underlying ones, in line with the principle of superposition. The term is commonly used when describing the vertical arrangement of beds, formations or lithological units in field sections, boreholes, and regional stratigraphies.

The contact between an överliggande unit and the underlying unit can be conformable, indicating continuous deposition with little or no interruption, or unconformable, reflecting a period of non-deposition or erosion followed by renewed sedimentation. Unconformities are important because they signify gaps in the geologic record and can record changes in environment, climate, or tectonics.

Identification and study of överligganden involve several methods. Geologists map outcrops and construct stratigraphic sections to delineate the boundaries and thicknesses of overlying units. Biostratigraphy, using fossil assemblages, helps correlate beds across regions and establish relative ages. Absolute dating techniques, such as radiometric dating on suitable minerals, may constrain the timing of deposition. Paleomagnetic data and sedimentological analyses further aid interpretation of depositional environments and tectonic history.

The concept is central to reconstructing geological history, understanding lithological variation, and assessing resource potential. Överligganden influence interpretations of past sea levels, climate, and tectonic movements and are routinely considered in mining, groundwater studies, and hydrocarbon exploration.
