Physically, öruggar are small, about 18 to 25 centimeters long, with a stocky body. They have dense, soft fur that ranges from ash gray to light brown, a short pointed snout, large forward-facing eyes, and agile limbs with curved claws suited for climbing. A semi-prehensile tail helps balance in trees.

Distribution and habitat place öruggar in mixed deciduous and coniferous forests, often near streams or damp clearings. They commonly use tree hollows, rock crevices, or abandoned nests as dens and may migrate seasonally between elevations.

Behavior and ecology describe öruggar as primarily nocturnal and either solitary or living in small family groups.
