öngörme is a Turkish term that denotes the act or capacity of foreseeing future events or consequences. It is closely linked to öngörü (foresight) and to the verb öngörmek (to foresee). The root is built from görmek, “to see,” with a prefix that signals looking ahead.

In everyday Turkish, öngörme is used in contexts such as planning, risk assessment, and strategic decision making. The related adjective öngörülü describes someone who is farsighted or prudent; a lack of foresight may be described with phrases like öngörü eksikliği.

Within Turkish discourse, öngörü is typically understood as practical and secular foresight rather than supernatural prophecy. Distinctions are made between informed forecasting and occult prediction, the latter often conveyed by terms such as kehanet or kahinlik.

Limitations of öngörme include inherent uncertainty, dependence on the quality of information, modeling assumptions, and unforeseen contingencies. Good foresight relies on scenario analysis, probabilistic thinking, and continual revision as new data emerge.
