ödémás

Ödémás refers to a condition characterized by localized or generalized swelling caused by the accumulation of excess fluid in body tissues. This swelling, known as edema, can occur in various parts of the body, including the legs, ankles, feet, hands, and face. The term "ödémás" is primarily used in Hungarian, where it is derived from the word for edema, "ödéma."

Edema develops when fluid balance is disrupted, leading to fluid leakage from blood vessels into surrounding tissues. Common causes include prolonged standing or sitting, which can cause fluid to pool in the legs due to gravity. Other contributing factors include heart, liver, or kidney disease, as these organs play a critical role in regulating fluid balance. Inflammatory conditions, infections, allergies, and certain medications—such as steroids or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)—can also lead to fluid retention.

Symptoms of edema typically include visible swelling, a feeling of tightness or fullness in the affected area, and sometimes skin that appears stretched or shiny. In severe cases, edema can cause discomfort, restricted movement, or even impaired circulation. Diagnosis often involves a physical examination, medical history review, and possibly additional tests like blood work, imaging, or ultrasound to identify underlying causes.

Treatment for edema depends on the underlying cause and may include lifestyle modifications such as elevating the affected limbs, reducing salt intake, and wearing compression stockings. In some cases, diuretics (water pills) may be prescribed to help the body eliminate excess fluid. Managing conditions like heart failure, kidney disease, or infections is also essential in reducing edema symptoms. If left untreated, severe edema can lead to complications such as skin ulcers, infections, or impaired organ function, emphasizing the importance of early medical evaluation.
