In imagined cultures, a ühtsemat is traditionally woven during a single communal event and then laid in a central space to symbolize cooperation among households, villages, or kin groups. The practice may accompany other rites such as feasting or renewal ceremonies.

Etymology and linguistic notes: The form resembles Estonian-language roots, with components that readers might interpret as meaning "one" or "together" and "mat." However, there is no attested historical usage of the term in real languages, and it functions primarily as a construct within fiction or hypothetical ethnography.
