They often operate under deadlines, follow newsroom or editorial guidelines, and collaborate with editors, photographers, and data specialists. The work requires accuracy, clear communication, and the ability to assess relevance and context.

Education and training vary by country, but many journalists hold degrees in journalism, communications, or related fields. Practical experience, internships, and a diverse portfolio are important. Professional associations and training programs provide continuing education, professional standards, and networking opportunities.

Ethics and standards are central to the profession. Journalists generally follow codes of ethics that emphasize accuracy, independence, fairness, transparency about sources, and minimizing harm. They should avoid conflicts of interest, verify information before publication, and protect confidential sources when required by law or ethics. Laws on defamation, privacy, and access to information shape reporting in different jurisdictions.
