yobidashi

Yobidashi are the ring announcers and ceremonial officials in professional sumo, responsible for introducing bouts and maintaining the traditional atmosphere surrounding the dohyo. They are employed by the Japan Sumo Association and are assigned to each basho (tournament). As part of the officiating staff alongside gyoji ( referees) and shimpan (judges), yobidashi coordinate the opening rituals and the start of each match.

The core duties of a yobidashi include calling out the names of the two wrestlers for every bout, along with their stable (heya) and ranking, as they step onto the dohyō. They also oversee pre-match ceremonies and the orderly progression of bouts, ensuring that the start sequence proceeds smoothly. In addition to vocal announcements, yobidashi contribute to the ceremonial character of the event through their conduct during the opening ritual and, in some cases, by performing traditional chants or spoken introductions that heighten the atmosphere.

Yobidashi are typically male officials who rise through a hierarchical system within the association. Many have backgrounds in sumo or related disciplines and receive specialized training in etiquette, timing, and the precise performative aspects of live sports announcements. The position is regarded as a respected, long-standing role within sumo culture, often involving long tenures and mentorship from senior yobidashi to newer members.
