Ympäristöstressi is a Finnish term that translates literally as “environmental stress.” It refers to the physical, chemical, biological, and socio‑economic stressors that organisms encounter in their surroundings, which can adversely affect health, performance, and survival. The concept is used widely in fields such as medical research, occupational health, psychology, and ecology.

In humans, environmental stressors may include air and water pollution, noise, light pollution, temperature extremes, chemical exposures, and psychosocial factors such as crowding or urban noise. In animals and plants, stressors include habitat fragmentation, climate change, invasive species, and anthropogenic noise. The physiological responses to these stressors commonly involve activation of the hypothalamic‑pituitary‑adrenal axis, release of cortisol or corticosterone, and changes in immune function, metabolism, and behaviour.

Studies show that chronic environmental stress can lead to health problems such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory disorders, mental health issues, and reduced immune competence. In workplaces, exposure to high noise levels, poor ventilation, or insufficient daylight has been linked to increased absenteeism and decreased productivity. For wildlife, environmental stress can reduce reproductive success, alter migration patterns, or increase mortality rates.

Mitigation strategies emphasise both individual and policy‑level actions. Personal measures include using air purifiers, wearing hearing protection, ensuring adequate sleep, and limiting exposure to high‑pollution areas. On a larger scale, regulations limiting emissions, creating green spaces, and enforcing occupational safety standards are essential. Adaptive management, such as monitoring environmental conditions and adjusting exposure limits, helps reduce chronic stress in both humans and ecosystems.

The recognition of ympäristöstressi has increased in recent years, encouraging interdisciplinary research that links environmental sciences with public health, occupational safety, and urban planning.
