Yield strength, or yieldlujuus in Finnish, is a fundamental material property that describes the point at which a material begins to deform plastically. Up to the yield strength, a material will return to its original shape after the applied stress is removed; this is known as elastic deformation. Beyond the yield strength, the material undergoes permanent deformation, meaning it will not return to its original shape even after the stress is released. This phenomenon is called plastic deformation.

The exact point of yielding can be difficult to determine precisely for some materials, especially those with a gradual transition from elastic to plastic behavior. In such cases, an offset yield strength is often used. This is determined by drawing a line parallel to the elastic portion of the stress-strain curve, offset by a small percentage of strain (commonly 0.2%). The stress at which this offset line intersects the stress-strain curve is defined as the yield strength.

Understanding yield strength is crucial in engineering design. It helps engineers determine the maximum stress a material can withstand before permanent deformation occurs, ensuring that structures and components do not fail under normal operating loads. It is a key parameter in designing everything from bridges and buildings to aircraft and everyday objects, preventing catastrophic failures and ensuring safety and functionality.
