Võrgukaablid, commonly referred to as network cables, are essential components for connecting electronic devices in a local area network (LAN). They facilitate the transmission of data between computers, routers, switches, and other network-enabled hardware. The most prevalent types of võrgukaablid are based on twisted pair technology, commonly known as Ethernet cables. These cables consist of pairs of insulated wires twisted together to reduce electromagnetic interference.

The categories of Ethernet cables, often denoted by Cat numbers, indicate their performance capabilities. Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat7, and Cat8 are examples, with higher numbers generally signifying greater bandwidth and faster data transmission speeds. Cat5e cables are suitable for speeds up to 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps), while Cat6 and Cat6a offer improved performance for 10 Gbps networks. Newer standards like Cat7 and Cat8 are designed for even higher speeds and frequencies, often employed in data centers and high-performance computing environments.

Another type of network cable is the fiber optic cable. Unlike copper-based Ethernet cables, fiber optic cables transmit data using light pulses through thin strands of glass or plastic. This technology offers significantly higher bandwidth, longer transmission distances, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, making it ideal for backbone networks, long-haul telecommunications, and demanding data-intensive applications. The choice between Ethernet and fiber optic cables depends on factors such as required speed, distance, cost, and environmental considerations.
