Værdistrømsanalyse, often translated as Value Stream Mapping (VSM), is a lean management method used to analyze and visualize the current state and desired future state of a process. It focuses on identifying and eliminating waste within a production or service delivery system. The core principle is to understand the flow of materials and information from the customer's order to the delivery of the product or service.

The process typically begins by mapping the current state of the value stream. This involves documenting all the steps, both value-adding and non-value-adding, that are involved in transforming raw materials into a finished product or delivering a service. Key elements captured include process times, lead times, inventory levels, and information flow. Data is collected directly from the shop floor or service environment to ensure accuracy.

Once the current state is understood, the analysis shifts to identifying sources of waste, often categorized using the TIMWOOD acronym: Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Overproduction, Over-processing, and Defects. The goal is to reduce or eliminate these waste factors. Following the current state analysis, a future state map is developed, illustrating an improved process with less waste and a more efficient flow.

The implementation of the future state map involves making specific changes to the process, such as reducing batch sizes, improving workflow, eliminating unnecessary steps, and enhancing communication. Værdistrømsanalyse is not a one-time event but rather a continuous improvement tool that helps organizations achieve higher quality, shorter lead times, and lower costs. It provides a visual language for teams to understand complex processes and collaborate on improvements.
