Væntingarbólur are small, fluid-filled sacs that can appear on the skin, particularly on the lips and surrounding areas. The term is derived from Icelandic and literally translates to "expectancy blisters" or "anticipation blisters." These are commonly known by other names in different regions, such as cold sores or fever blisters, and are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

HSV is a common virus, and many people carry it without ever showing symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they often manifest as small blisters or a cluster of blisters that can be itchy, painful, or tingly before forming. These blisters typically rupture, ooze, and then form a crust, eventually healing without scarring. The virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate periodically, leading to recurrent outbreaks.
