HSV

HSV is an acronym that can refer to several distinct concepts in science and sport. The most common uses are in color science, virology, and professional football.

In color science, HSV stands for Hue, Saturation, and Value. It is a cylindrical-coordinate representation of points in the RGB color model used by many graphic design and image-processing systems. Hue specifies the type of color (angle around the color wheel, typically 0–360 degrees). Saturation describes the intensity or purity of the color (0% is gray). Value, also called brightness, indicates the lightness of the color (0% is black; 100% is the most vivid). The HSV model is designed to align more closely with human perception of color, and is often preferred for selecting colors in user interfaces.

In virology, HSV refers to herpes simplex viruses, designated HSV-1 and HSV-2. They are double-stranded DNA viruses that cause oral and genital herpes, among other diseases. Transmission is usually through direct contact with infected secretions. Primary infections may be asymptomatic or show lesions; viruses establish lifelong latency in sensory nerve ganglia with recurrent outbreaks. Antiviral medications, such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir, can reduce symptoms and transmission but do not cure the infection. Vaccines are under investigation.

Hamburger Sport-Verein, commonly Hamburger SV or HSV, is a German professional football club based in Hamburg. Founded in 1887, the club has a long history in German football, including national championships and a European Cup victory in 1983-84. The team plays home games at the Volksparkstadion and has been a staple of German football for decades.
