Välimuisti, commonly referred to as cache in English, is a temporary storage area used to speed up data access. It holds frequently used data so that it can be retrieved more quickly than if it had to be fetched from the original, slower source. This concept is applied across various computing contexts, from hardware to software.

In hardware, CPU caches are small, high-speed memory units located directly on or very close to the processor. These caches store instructions and data that the CPU is likely to need soon, reducing the time spent waiting for data from main memory (RAM). There are typically multiple levels of CPU cache, with L1 being the fastest and smallest, followed by L2 and L3.

Software also utilizes caching extensively. Web browsers cache web page elements like images, scripts, and stylesheets to reduce loading times for repeat visits to a website. Operating systems may cache frequently accessed files in memory to speed up file operations. Databases often implement caching mechanisms to store query results, thereby avoiding redundant computation or disk I/O.

The primary benefit of caching is performance improvement. By reducing the latency of data retrieval, applications and systems can operate more efficiently. However, cache management also introduces complexity. Ensuring that cached data remains up-to-date with the original source (cache coherency) is a critical challenge. If cached data becomes stale, it can lead to errors or incorrect behavior. The size of the cache is another important factor; a cache that is too small may not be effective, while one that is too large can be expensive and potentially slower due to increased search times within the cache itself.
