Vyötäröpituussuhde, often abbreviated as WHR, is a simple measurement used to assess body fat distribution. It is calculated by dividing the circumference of the waist by the circumference of the hips. A healthy WHR can indicate a lower risk of certain health problems associated with excess abdominal fat.

The measurement is taken at the narrowest point of the torso for the waist measurement and at the widest point of the hips and buttocks for the hip measurement. Different organizations and health authorities provide slightly varying guidelines for what constitutes a healthy WHR, but generally, a lower ratio is considered more favorable.

A high WHR, particularly in women, is often associated with an "apple" body shape, where fat is predominantly stored around the abdomen. This type of fat, known as visceral fat, is metabolically active and has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. Conversely, a lower WHR, often seen in a "pear" body shape with fat distributed more around the hips and thighs, is generally associated with a lower health risk.

While WHR is a useful and easy-to-perform indicator, it is not the sole determinant of health. Other factors like body mass index (BMI), overall body composition, and lifestyle habits also play significant roles in assessing an individual's health status.
