In Russian and other languages of the former Soviet Union, the term vizualizatsiya (transliteration: vizualizatsiya) is commonly used for this practice, encompassing both data visualization and the broader act of rendering information visually. The field includes data visualization, information visualization, scientific visualization, and visual analytics, as well as infographics and architectural visualization.

Typical goals include unveiling patterns, trends, correlations, and anomalies; supporting decision making; and communicating findings to diverse audiences. The practice involves data collection and cleaning, selection of appropriate visual encodings (position, length, angle, color), and careful layout. Visualizations can be static or interactive, and may appear in reports, dashboards, research papers, journalism, or educational materials.

Common tools and methods include charts and graphs (bar, line, scatter), maps, heatmaps, network diagrams, 3D models, and interactive dashboards. Popular software and libraries include Tableau, Power BI, D3.js, Python's Matplotlib and seaborn, and R's ggplot2. The field has a long history, from early statistical charts by William Playfair to modern web-based interactive visualizations; it emphasizes accuracy, clarity, accessibility, and responsible design to avoid misleading interpretations.
