Virginity is a culturally and socially constructed concept referring to the state of a person who has not engaged in penetrative sexual intercourse as defined by a culture or individual. Because definitions vary, the term often reflects social norms rather than a precise biological marker.

Definitions differ widely. In many Western contexts virginity is commonly associated with first vaginal intercourse, but some cultures consider other acts or experiences as the moment of losing virginity. Others define virginity as simply having no prior sexual experience, regardless of the acts involved.

Biologically, there is no universally reliable sign of virginity. The hymen can be stretched or torn by nonsexual activities such as physical exercise, medical examinations, or accidents, and some individuals retain hymenal tissue after sexual activity. Therefore virginity cannot be judged by a physical condition alone.

Attitudes toward virginity have influenced social norms around sexuality, gender roles, marriage, and notions of purity or honor. These beliefs can shape expectations and behavior, sometimes contributing to stigma or pressure. Education that emphasizes consent, safe sex, and respectful relationships can address myths about virginity and reduce harm. Virginity testing—an attempt to assess virginity through physical examination—is widely discredited and condemned by medical and human rights organizations.

Today, many people view virginity as a personal and private matter, focusing on informed choice and consent rather than treating virginity as a fixed status.
