Vireonidae, commonly known as vireos, is a family of small to medium passerine birds found primarily in the Americas. Members inhabit a broad range of habitats, from temperate woodlands to tropical forests and edge zones, and are especially common in forests with dense foliage. The best-known members belong to the genus Vireo, the true vireos, though the family also includes several tropical lineages described in other genera according to some classifications.

Physically, vireos typically show dull olive to gray plumage, though tropical species may be greener or more colorful. They have stout, pointed bills well suited to gleaning insects from leaves and twigs. Their size varies, but most are around the length of a small sparrow to a robin. Diet is mainly insectivorous, with fruit consumption more common outside the breeding season.

Behavior and reproduction: Vireos are usually shy and inconspicuous, often heard rather than seen. They forage by picking prey from foliage or by short flights to catch insects in mid-air. Many species sing with simple, repeated phrases and calls that serve to defend territory and attract mates. Nests are typically cup-shaped and placed in trees or shrubs; eggs are laid in the spring or summer, with incubation and chick-rearing usually shared by both parents.

Taxonomy and conservation: Vireonidae is a distinct family within the order Passeriformes. While habitat loss and fragmentation threaten some tropical species, most vireos remain common and widespread across their ranges; regional declines occur where forests are cleared. Notable species include the red-eyed vireo (Vireo olivaceus), white-eyed vireo (Vireo griseus), and yellow-throated vireo (Vireo flavifrons).
