Chickrearing refers to the management and care of young birds from hatch or arrival at the farm through to the end of the brooding period, when the animals transition to grower diets and less intensive care. It is a critical phase for survival, growth rate, and future productivity of poultry or other avian species.

Key requirements include a controlled brooding environment with an appropriate microclimate, heat, and humidity. Temperature is high at hatch (about 32-35°C) and gradually reduced over several weeks. Adequate ventilation, dry litter, and stable light cycles support feeding behavior and prevent health problems. Space and perching are adjusted to age, with gentle handling and biosecurity measures to reduce stress and disease transmission.

Nutrition and water are central. Chicks receive a starter diet with elevated protein and energy content, typically fed as crumble or pellet, with constant access to clean water. Feed is provided on a structured schedule early on, then ad libitum as birds mature. Transition to grower feed occurs when birds reach a target age or body weight.

Health management focuses on vaccination according to species and disease risk, routine cleaning and disinfection, parasite control, and rapid response to signs of illness such as reduced appetite, lethargy, or coughing. Monitoring growth rates and body condition supports early intervention. Welfare considerations include minimizing handling stress and ensuring appropriate stocking density and litter quality.
