Vinylesterharter refers to the hardener used in vinylester resins. Vinylester resins are a type of thermosetting polymer that combines some of the properties of both polyesters and epoxies. The hardener is a chemical agent that initiates and facilitates the curing process of the resin, transforming it from a liquid to a solid, infusible material.

Typically, the hardener for vinylester resins is an organic peroxide, most commonly methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP). When mixed with the resin, MEKP decomposes into free radicals. These free radicals then react with the unsaturated bonds in the vinylester resin molecules, causing them to cross-link and form a rigid, three-dimensional network. Accelerators, often cobalt-based compounds, are usually added to the resin formulation to speed up the decomposition of the peroxide and thus the curing process.

The amount of hardener used is critical for proper curing. Too little hardener will result in incomplete curing, leaving the resin soft and with poor mechanical properties. Too much hardener can lead to excessive heat generation during curing (exotherm), potentially causing thermal degradation, cracking, or reduced performance. The curing time and temperature are also important factors influenced by the type and amount of hardener, as well as ambient conditions. Vinylester resins cured with these hardeners are known for their excellent chemical resistance, good mechanical strength, and relatively fast curing times, making them suitable for applications such as boat hulls, chemical storage tanks, and corrosion-resistant coatings.
